IBEW Members + Credit Union is a financial cooperative chartered in 1953 to provide dedicated financial services to our members.  Membership in the credit union includes the following:
  • Members of the I.B.E.W. working in the jurisdiction of Local Union 302 I.B.E.W.,  Members of I.B.E.W. Local 2131, Members of the U.A.L.U #159, immediate family of a member, associations of this Credit Union, employees of this Credit Union, employees of Local Union 302 I.B.E.W., Employees of U.A.L.U. #159, other Credit Unions organized under either the Federal or State laws appertaining to Credit Unions and Local Union 302 I.B.E.W. and U.A.L.U. #159 (sponsor organization).

                          History

In 1952, Leland Sapp, Ray Tarleton, and Abraham Zarcone, all members of Local Union 302 I.B.E.W., were working together on the same electrical construction job site.  They ate lunch together daily and frequently talked about how tough it was to borrow money.  They had heard, from traveling I.B.E.W. brothers working in the area, of other I.B.E.W. Local Unions forming Credit Unions and pooling funds among their own membership to make low interest loans.  This really piqued their interest.  They began meeting evenings in the home of Leland Sapp to discuss the possibility of forming a Credit Union for the members of Local Union 302 I.B.E.W., and then they took their idea to the brotherhood at a regular union meeting.  They got the support of their fellow brothers and formed an organizational committee.

Their first contact for help was the California Department of Corporations.  They sent them information and referred them to the California Credit Union League (CCUL) for additional assistance.  The CCUL sent them Model State of California Articles of Incorporation forms, model Bylaws and model Organizational Meeting Minutes.  After meeting on many occasions, our Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws were developed.  The Articles of Incorporation were filed with the Secretary of State of the State of California on March 27, 1953.  An application, on behalf of the Credit Union, was made to the Commissioner of Corporations for a Certificate authorizing the Credit Union to act as such on May 6, 1953.

The original field of membership read as follows:
  • Members of Local Union 302 I.B.E.W., members of their immediate family, associations of this Credit Union, employees of this Credit Union, and employees of the Local Union 302 I.B.E.W.
The Credit Union opened for business on May 26, 1953, in the Local Union 302 I.B.E.W. building at 257 5th Street, Richmond, CA.  This turned out to be a very bad situation because there was no office available for the Credit Union.  The office then moved to the home of Lester Phillips, at 2535 Grant Ave., Richmond, CA., the newly appointed Treasurer, and operated out of his dining room for 2 years.  In 1955, Jim Cornelius was elected Treasurer and the office moved to his home at 3201 Rheem Ave., Richmond, CA., and operated out of his dining room.  In 1957, he added a room onto the back of his house, with a separate entrance, and there the Credit Union bloomed until his retirement in 1974.  The Credit Union then moved to the home of George Cox, the newly elected Treasurer, on May 1, 1974, to an office building in Pinole on June 1, 1993, and finally to our current location in Martinez on September 1, 2000.

The Credit Union started by offering fifty charter memberships, the first member being John A. Doyle.

The original Supervisory Committee was:

  • Thomas J. Ryan
  • Robert J. Holcomb
  • George E. Coffey
